Angkor Wat

I'm kind of beat today so I'll keep this posting brief. We flew in to Siem Reap yesterday (Friday) morning and started touring the Wats (Temples) at sun set. We went to Phnom Bakheng which is the best for viewing the sun set. It was an amazing site to see.

After that we went to dinner and a show. Again, traditional Khmer dance (like we saw the kids do at the Center). The food was pretty bad and the show was less than impressive, so we cut out a bit early and went back to our hotel for an early night in.

Saturday morning we woke up at 4:30am for a 5am pick up to be at Angkor Wat for sun rise. This was VERY impressive. The sun rose around 6am and produced beatiful colors on the Wat.

Following that we had breakfast at a little outdoor cafe (with very aggressive and not so nice vendors) near Bayon at Angkor Thom. Angkor Thom is a 3km square area with several Wats, the main one being Bayon. Bayan is the famous Wat with all of the face carvings.

I've seen a lot of pretty amazing places in my travels, but next to the Taj Mahal, this is the most imressive thing I've ever seen. It's just overwhelming how intricate the carvings are. The detail is incredible.

After Angkor Thom, we took a tuk tuk tour around some other smaller Wats and headed back to our hotel. All of this before 9am! I'm completely exhausted and plan to spend the rest of the day sitting by the pool at the hotel reading a book.

Back to Phnom Penh and work with the kids tomorrow morning...
